Why Is Linen So Expensive?

Why Is Linen So Expensive?

Have you ever had sticker shock when shopping for linen products?

If so, you may be wondering why 100% linen products come with such a high price tag.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the high price of linen, like the labor-intensive harvesting process and the specialized machinery required to manufacture it.

So today we're going to do a deep dive into why linen is so expensive - and why we think it's worth it!

Why Is Linen So Expensive?

The Linen Production Process

The number one factor that goes into linen's high price point is its production process. Linen is made from flax, a plant that requires careful harvesting and processing.

The flax plant is grown in cooler regions, including Europe, North America, and some parts of Asia. Our linen products all come from certified European Flax™ grown in France.

Here is a quick overview of the production process of linen:

  • Flax seeds are sown in early Spring and take several months to mature
  • Once ready, the flax is carefully harvested with its root system to keep the long length of the fibers
  • Flax then goes through the retting process, which naturally breaks down the outer stalk to release the fibers
  • They then undergo scutching, which is when the woody stems are separated from the fibers
  • The fibers are then combed and spun into yarn before being woven into fabric

Supply and Demand

Linen’s high cost is also influenced by supply and demand. Flax, the plant used to produce linen, can only be grown in specific climates and takes months to mature, making it a limited resource.

Additionally, the global demand for high-quality, sustainable fabrics has risen in recent years, further driving up prices.

Because linen production is labor-intensive and not easily scalable, supply remains relatively low compared to mass-produced fabrics like cotton or polyester.

This imbalance between limited supply and increasing demand naturally results in higher costs for linen products.

The Density And Weight of Linen

Linen is a naturally dense fabric, which makes it heavier than cotton or synthetic alternatives. This added weight contributes to its durability and luxurious feel but also affects the cost.

Heavier fabrics require more raw material per square foot, which increases product costs.

The added weight also leads to higher shipping costs, especially for bulkier items like bedding and curtains.

This combination of factors makes linen more expensive to produce and transport compared to lighter fabrics.

Is Linen Worth The High Price?

We may be a bit biased - but we think that linen is one of the best investments

While linen may have a higher upfront cost, its durability, eco-friendly qualities, and timeless aesthetic make it a worthwhile investment.

Durability

Linen is one of the strongest natural fibers and it actually softens and improves over time.

A well-cared-for linen piece can last for many years, making it a smarter choice than cheaper fabrics that need frequent replacing.

Timeless Aesthetic

Linen’s effortlessly relaxed yet refined look never goes out of style.

Its natural texture and signature wrinkles add character, giving your home or wardrobe a timeless appeal.

Sustainability

Linen is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics available.

The flax plant requires minimal water and fewer pesticides compared to cotton, which helps reduce its environmental footprint.

Additionally, every part of the flax plant can be used, from the fibers for fabric to the seeds for oil, making it a zero-waste crop.

Linen also uses a natural retting process rather than requiring chemical treatment. This makes the production process much more environmentally friendly than other textiles.

Our linen is also OEKO-TEX certified, which means it is made without harmful chemicals and toxic dyes.

Comfort and Breathability

Linen is naturally temperature-regulating, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Its moisture-wicking properties also make it ideal for bedding and clothing, ensuring all-day comfort.

Our linen also comes pre-washed so it's super soft and comfy from day one!
