FAQ
About our products
Why should I choose linen bedding?
Linen is naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
It softens over time, lasts for years, and is one of the most sustainable fabric choices available.
Are your products pre-washed?
Yes! Our linen is pre-washed for extra softness, so it feels comfortable from day one and only gets better with time.
Where is Sunday Spell linen made?
All of our products are designed with care in Charleston, South Carolina.
We’re proud to use only certified European Flax® linen, grown in the fields of France and Belgium. This certification ensures that our linen is of the highest quality, fully traceable, and produced with sustainability in mind.
The linen fibers are then woven and sewn in a small, specialized factory in China—a trusted partner that aligns with our values for craftsmanship and ethical production.
Here are a few things we love about our factory:
- Exclusively work with linen, making them highly experienced and deeply knowledgeable about the material.
- OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning they're free from harmful substances and safe for sensitive skin.
- Regular SMETA audits to ensure ethical working conditions, fair labor standards, and a safe environment for workers.
We’ve chosen every partner with intention, so you can feel good about what you're sleeping in—from seed to stitch.
Is all linen created equally?
No. The quality of linen depends on factors like fiber length, weave, and weight. Our linen is made from premium European flax, woven at a 170 GSM weight, ensuring durability, softness, and breathability.
What does 170GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter, which measures fabric weight and density. Our 170 GSM linen strikes the perfect balance—light enough to be breathable yet substantial enough for durability and long-term comfort.
What does OEKO-TEX certified mean?
OEKO-TEX certification means our linen is free from harmful chemicals and toxic dyes, ensuring it’s safe for both you and the environment.
What size should I get for my bed?
Our bedding follows standard U.S. mattress sizes. Check our size guide for precise measurements.
How to care for linen
How should I wash and dry linen bedding?
To prolong the life of your linen, wash in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry for best results.
Your bedding may feel a bit stiff to the touch when air drying. Our favorite way to fix this is to tumble dry on low until damp and then hang or lay flat until fully dry.
You should not use fabric softeners or bleach on linen fabrics. Dry cleaning is not recommended.
What detergent should I use?
Use a mild detergent without harsh chemicals or optical brighteners to preserve the natural fibers.
Can I iron or steam linen?
Linen’s relaxed, natural texture is part of its charm, but if needed, you can steam or iron on low heat while slightly damp.
How can I soften my linen?
Good news—your linen will naturally soften over time with regular use and washing! But if you're eager to speed up the process, here are a few gentle tips:
- Wash it often – Linen gets better with age. Each wash helps break in the fibers and brings out that signature softness.
- Use a gentle, liquid detergent – Harsh chemicals can damage linen over time. Stick with something mild and natural.
- Tumble dry on low – While air drying is great for longevity, a low tumble dry can help relax the fibers and make your linen feel a bit cozier, faster.
- Avoid fabric softeners – They can actually coat the fibers and make your linen less breathable. Instead, add a splash of white vinegar to your rinse cycle for an all-natural softening boost.
Why is my linen shedding?
Shedding (or “linting”) is normal for new linen and will reduce after a few washes. Washing separately and avoiding fabric softeners helps minimize shedding.
How do I get stains out of my linen?
Because linen is highly absorbent, it's important to tend to stains as soon as possible.
Blot (don’t rub) with cold water and apply a mild stain remover or baking soda paste before washing as usual. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach.
Will the colors fade or transfer?
Our linen is pre-washed so color transfer should not occur.
However, we always recommend washing linen separately from other materials.
Because we do not use harsh chemicals like formaldehyde to set our dyes, some fading is normal over time. To minimize fading, wash in cold water and dry on low.
Will my linen bedding shrink?
We pre-wash our linen to minimize shrinkage. This means your bedding should fit perfectly from day one.
Always use low heat when drying to avoid unwanted shrinkage.
Sustainability
Is linen a sustainable fabric?
Yes! Linen is made from flax, which requires less water, fewer pesticides, and minimal processing compared to cotton.
It’s biodegradable, durable, and a great choice for sustainable living.
How does Sunday Spell prioritize sustainability?
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From the materials we choose to the partners we work with, we’re committed to creating products that are gentle on the planet and made to last.
Here’s how we prioritize sustainability at Sunday Spell:
- Natural Materials – We use 100% certified European Flax® linen, one of the most sustainable fabrics in the world. Linen requires less water, fewer pesticides, and produces minimal waste during processing.
- Long-Lasting Quality – Our bedding is made to be loved for years, not seasons.
- Safe & Responsible Production – All dyes and materials are OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals. Our partner factory also undergoes regular SMETA audits to ensure ethical labor practices and safe working conditions.
- Intentional Design – We focus on timeless styles and reversible designs, encouraging customers to get more use (and joy!) out of fewer pieces.
- Eco-Friendly Packaging – Our outer packaging is 100% recyclable, product bags from our manufacturer are biodegradable, and our thank you cards are designed with artwork on the back, so they can be repurposed as decor instead of thrown away.
We’re not perfect—but we’re committed to growing thoughtfully and transparently, always keeping quality and integrity at the forefront.
Are your products made ethically?
Yes—ethical production is a top priority at Sunday Spell.
We work closely with a small, trusted factory that specializes in linen and shares our values for quality, transparency, and fair treatment of workers. The factory undergoes regular SMETA audits, which assess everything from labor standards and health and safety to environmental impact and business ethics.
In addition, all materials used in our products—including dyes and finishes—are OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning they are safe for both people and the planet.
Do you use eco-friendly packaging?
Yes! We’ve made intentional choices to keep our packaging as low-impact and planet-friendly as possible.
- All outer packaging is recyclable, so you can easily dispose of it responsibly.
- Our product bags are biodegradable, reducing long-term waste.
- Each order includes a thank you card with original artwork on the back, so it can be reused as a print or mini piece of decor.
We're always looking for ways to do better, and sustainable packaging is one small but meaningful part of that commitment.
